Exhibition about marginalized groups opened
Banjaluka, 13 June 2013
An exhibition about marginalized and vulnerable groups in BiH was solemnly opened on Wednesday evening in “Dom omladine” Banjaluka.
Organized by Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banjaluka and CURE Foundation Sarajevo, the exhibition  remains open within the next seven days. The aim is to draw attention to position of the most vulnerable groups in our society.
40 photos are displayed at the exhibition out of total 52 which were received at open announcement and 15 photographers and photo reporters. About thirty visitors at the opening voted for the best and most authentic photos of which 12 will be selected for calendar 2014 according to jury’s decision too. The calendar will be printed in several thousands copies and distributed to most of BiH institutions. Voting will be continued the next week too including an official Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banjaluka web site  (www.hcabl.org).
The mere exhibition resulted as an idea from the Srđan Aleksić Journalist Award for ethical and professional reporting on marginalized groups in BiH. This year the Award was given for the third time.   "Bearing in mind that photos cannot apply for the Srđan Aleksić awards, we wanted to involve photographers and photo reporters more actively into promoting professional reporting on the most needy groups with this exhibition”, Aleksandar Žolja from hCa said.
The exhibition is part of the X-Press II – Social Inclusion through the Media project whose aim is to sensitize the media to report on marginalized and vulnerable groups in our society. The project is funded by the European Union.

Let’s chose future – from too many words spoken in the past, the future cannot be built
Banja Luka, 11 June 2013
In time of a great tackle against the “white plague” and a half of million unemployed people, we witness the selfish and arbitrary acting of parliamentary representatives and not implementing  decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A public awareness rise of citizens, initiated by illness of a three-month old girl Belmina, is the indicator that this country still has self-conscious citizens. The fact that ID numbers  is a burning issue is shown by large crowds of mothers with small children who told the parliamentary members and the rest of the world too that elected representatives do not work for the citizens.  These days students from Banjaluka and Sarajevo seek their rights, ecologists protest for concessions to natural resources of this country, Vulić family is joined by many citizens in defending this family’s property. Civil altruism has been  showing its courage these days.
Women’s Alternative Government of BiH is supporting the efforts of the citizens to demand the respect of the basic human rights and we condemn any attempt of political parties to use the events for daily political scene and presenting themselves as victims of hostage crisis.

Think. Eat. Save. PDF Print E-mail
Think. Eat. Save.
Banja Luka, 6 June 2013
“Many predict that   life we know and live now soon will not be possible because of climate changes and irrational use of natural resources”, said Miodrag Dakić from Environment Center Banjaluka at yesterday’s “brunch with journalists”. On the occasion of the World Environment Day – June 5th, he said that 20000 children die every day due to malnutrition “while at the same time enormous quantities of food are thrown away in economically developed countries”.
This year’s slogan of the World Environment Day is “Think. Eat. Save.” is trying to raise people’s awareness about the food they eat and amounts of it they throw away. For instance, every year in the USA 30% of the food, worth of 48,3 billions of dollars  is disposed which is almost equal to total net food production of sub-Sahara Africa or 230 millions of tons.  Speaking of eating habits in BiH, Dakić said that enough attention is not given to healthy food and production of such food. “This topic is not discussed about in schools, unhealthy food is advertised and citizens, by buying a low-quantity food create a demand for such food”, Dakić declared. “Genetically modified food is at market and big multi-national companies like “Monsanto” are trying to put market at its control. Sovereignty food movements, active in many countries are trying to prevent the import of genetically modified organisms”, stressed Dakić adding that BiH may join the countries not allowing GMO import.
Asked what is the way of impacting citizens not to throw away food and eat healthy food, Dakić’s reply was  that people’s awareness should be primarily raised. One of the ways of doing it  is to form groups of solidarity exchange ordering food from local organic food farmers.
“Except it, “city gardens” should be promoted, I am talking about parcels given by authorities to  people to raise  vegetables. It would include the urban planning to leave enough green space where citizens can raise vegetables on. Unfortunately, there is a long way ahead for us to do it”, emphasized Dakić.  Not throwing away food means caring for environment, caring for expanses of its own households. It means caring for others who do not have available food. At http://www.dosarajevo.com/ you can find some useful tips how to keep groceries fresh and what do to with food left over.
