The Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka submitted a complaint to the Institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of BiH in order to point out, in this way, the alarming situation in which the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina found itself.
The complaint states, among other things, that the closure of the library, as an institution for the preservation, professional processing and distribution of knowledge, would represent a violation of human rights and basic freedoms of the citizens of BiH, above all the right to access information and the ability to freely receive and disseminate information.
We would like to remind you that due to the lack of money, the continuation of the work of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina is uncertain, which is why, it was announced that the door will be locked on August 25.
The reasons for this state of affairs can be traced back decades. We would like to point out that the current situation with the National and University Library and the announcement of its closure may have profound implications both for individuals and for the wider community, which could be deprived of books and key sources of information, and the publishing industry in BiH will also feel the consequences.
