The two-day program within the “Srđan Aleksić Days” in Banja Luka has ended, and during this part of the event three interesting panels were held, a revue of short documentaries about human rights and the exhibition “Portraits of Strength”.
At the panel “Rights, position and obstacles faced by defenders of human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina – main findings and recommendations”, our panelists pointed out that human rights defenders are still faced with numerous problems and re-criminalization of defamation, SLAPP lawsuits, misunderstanding or constant pulling back by the system certainly contribute this.
As part of this panel, a new report entitled “Human Rights Defenders in Bosnia and Herzegovina – Rights, Position and Obstacles (2023 – 2024)” was presented, and what are its recommendations and what is highlighted in it can be read at the link: https://kucaljudskihprava.org/izvjestaj-o-braniteljima-i…/
At the panel entitled “Who is bothered by female presidents, delegates, directors and deans – language practices in law and other areas of life”, it was discussed why the use of gender-sensitive language is often met with resistance from conservative organizations, anti-gender movements, and even professional bodies, and what are the ways and needs to finally introduce women in terms of linguistics in the highest legal acts as well as their professions in everyday language and communication.
The day before, on December 9, the traditional Revue of Short Documentaries was held, as well as a panel with authors, and the importance of film in promoting human rights and raising the awareness of both individuals and the public was highlighted.
At the Student Cultural Center, visitors also had the opportunity to view an exhibition of portraits of 12 women human rights defenders from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Ukraine, Croatia, Georgia, Norway, Serbia, Poland and Russia.
This is the third edition of the exhibition titled “Portraits of Strength” organized by the Human Rights House Foundation, which aims to pay tribute and highlight the vital role that women play in defending human rights and freedoms.
