Meeting with the chairman of the Committee for the Fight against Corruption: On the introduction of the concept of sexual extortion into laws

The term sexual extortion needs to be introduced into the anti-corruption strategies in BiH and to be legally and formally recognized, pointed out the representatives of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka at the meeting held today, May 17, 2024, with Branislav Borenović, chairman of the Committee for the Fight against Corruption in the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH.

At the meeting, we discussed the campaign “Sexual Extortion is Corruption. Let’s Break the Silence!”, implemented by the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka.

We also informed the chairman of the Committee for the Fight against Corruption and the member of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH with the results of the Research on the Prevalence of Sexual Extortion in Society and the Analysis of Regulations regarding Sexual Extortion (sextortion).

Sexual extortion is a combination of sexual harassment and corruption (it has elements of a corrupt act) and it always happens from the position of a superior person, that is, someone who has power.

We talked about the fact that not a single law, neither at the state nor at the entity level, incorporates the concept of sexual extortion, which also makes difficult the process of reporting this type of unwanted phenomenon, which is still perceived as “silent corruption”.
