Marin Alsop was told that she would never conduct a symphony orchestra. But they were wrong. Marin Alsop fulfilled her dream and became the conductor and first female music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in Brazil and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Her life and rise in the very traditional male world of classical music was immortalized by the Austrian director Bernadettte Wegenstein in her multiple award-winning documentary film “Dirigentica” – “The Conductor“.
At one of the panels organized as part of the Gender Equality Forum 2022, the participants had the opportunity to talk with the director of this film, which was filmed for almost 5 years – the film crew headed by Bernadette followed Marin at her concerts around the world. Marin is one of the few women in the world who managed to hold the conductor’s baton, and Bernadette, who made a film about her, is one of the 25% of female directors in Europe.
