Jovana Kisin Zagajac and Aleksandar Jokić, lawyers from Banja Luka, are not only legal experts, but also prominent human rights defenders, who have shown their immediate and selfless action many times in practice, just when activists needed their help and support the most.
One of the recent examples is when the participants of the “Democracy Burial” performance were stopped for several hours in Banja Luka, not far from the National Assembly of the RS, and when the police also wrote misdemeanor charges against them. Kisin Zagajac and Jokić came immediately to that same spot to provide legal assistance and advice.
It was a real example of the combined action of the profession and activism when it is most needed.
Also, on many occasions they expressed their legal and fact-based opinions in public about various disputed laws, such as the introduction of the criminalization of defamation, then the draft law on the so-called “foreign agents”, various repressive measures, and they were devoted to the democratic values and called the government officials to take responsibility, pointing out violations of rights and conventions.
The role of lawyers in the fight for the rights of activists, for freedom of speech, freedom of action and other freedoms is of great importance for building a more open, just and democratic society.
