Did you know that women in Bosnia and Herzegovina are not recognized in the Constitution of BiH? The Constitution of BiH does not guarantee equality between women and men, does not protect reproductive rights, does not mention the right to health and social care, does not recognize single parents, does not protect women in the workplace during pregnancy and maternity leave, etc.
That is why we ask the question: What rights are not in the Constitution of BiH – and why this must change?
As part of the campaign of the Initiative “Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform”, we invite you to take a look together at what is missing from the highest legal act of BiH and why it is important that the Constitution of BiH becomes a document that protects everyone – without exception.
- Because rights that are not written down – do not apply.
- People who are not named – do not exist.
- And a society that accepts this – cannot move forward.
Women in BiH still earn less, advance less often, are more often discriminated against, and reproductive rights remain without constitutional protection.
Victims of violence often remain unprotected because free legal aid is not systematically guaranteed.
We can no longer leave out and neglect women’s voices, perspectives, and experiences. That is why each post of this campaign is accompanied by an adequate text explaining which right is missing from the Constitution of BiH, how it affects the lives of ordinary people, and why that right should be incorporated into the text of the Constitution of BiH.
With this campaign, we also say that:
- It is time for a constitution that uses language that does not erase anyone.
- It is time for a constitution that does not belong to political elites, but to all of us.
- It is time to say: Women’s rights are constitutional rights.
