STREET ACTION HELD IN BRČKO: We should not remain silent about sexual extortion

Street action on the occasion of the campaign “Sexual Extortion is Corruption. Let’s Break the Silence!” was held today, May 29, at Trg mladih in Brčko, and was organized by the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka in cooperation with the Center for Youth Development PRONI.

We want to thank to the citizens of Brčko District, as well as the media, for recognizing the importance of this topic.

In the conversation with them, we heard that there is sexual extortion, from workplaces to educational spheres, but it is still mostly kept silent.

Sexual extortion (sextortion) is a combination of sexual harassment and corruption, which as such is still not formally – legally recognized in the laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We hope that the concept of sexual extortion will be included in laws and anti-corruption strategies, that victims will report sexual extortion, and that they will have adequate protection and support mechanisms.

We remind you that we have already organized street actions in Sarajevo, Bijeljina, Banja Luka, Zenica, Modriča, Tuzla and Bosansko Grahovo.

The Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka, with the support of the Center for Civic Initiatives and USAID, implements this campaign, within the project “Citizens in the Fight against Silent Corruption”.

You can find more about our research on sexual extortion and analysis of legal regulations on our website in the Publications section.
