December 8 – Remembrance Day for the Suffering of Women in the War in BiH

On the occasion of the commemoration of December 8 – the Remembrance Day for the Suffering of Women in the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly and the Foundation United Women, members of the Initiative Peace with Women’s Face, with volunteers and students of the Faculty of Medicine in Banja Luka, as well as members The Committee for the International Exchange of Medical Students of the Republic of Srpska held a street action distributing promotional material, and in this way we pointed out the unfair attitude of society towards women who are victims of war, who do not have an adequate place in the collective memory, without a monument or a day to remember them and tear them from oblivion.

According to data from the Bosnian Book of the Dead, 9,901 women were killed in the war in BiH, which accounts for 10.31% of the total number of victims in the war and 25 percent of the civilian victims of the war. Their names are rarely or almost never found on monuments and memorials, and the memory of them is preserved only by family members or close friends.

Members of the Initiative Peace with Women’s Face are celebrating the Remembrance Day for the Suffering of Women in the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina, today throughout BiH, and in this way, since 2014, they have been pointing out the unfair attitude of society towards women who are victims of war, and who do not have an adequate place in collective memory, without monuments or a day to remember them and tear them from oblivion.
