Remembrance Day for the Suffering of Women in the War in BiH

Today, December 8 – the Remembrance Day for the Suffering of Women in the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina – was marked at the premises of the Association “Women Can Do It” in Banja Luka. The Initiative “Peace with a Women’s Face” aims to reduce the exclusion of women from the process of memorializing the suffering in the war in the period 1992–1995, as well as to improve the appreciation of women’s experiences and contributions in building a shared culture of remembrance.

The activity was held in cooperation with the Foundation “United Women”, the “Lara” Foundation from Bijeljina as part of the Initiative “Peace with a Women’s Face”, and the program began at 12:00 PM with the presence of about 30 members from the associations. The participants had the opportunity to learn about the key goals and activities of the Initiative through the distribution of informational material and a discussion on the significance of this date. The importance of raising awareness about the suffering of women in war and the need to recognize their key role in the peacebuilding process was emphasized.

This day is not only an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims, but also to remind everyone of the importance of fighting against forgetting. Participants are invited to build bridges of peace together, giving a voice to women who, despite severe suffering, have contributed to creating a better future.

The celebration of December 8 is also a reminder that peace has a female face and that without respecting women’s experiences, it is not possible to create a just society based on truth and reconciliation.
